COLOR:
The most important part of the look is to wear the correct shade! A bold lip might seem intimidating but finding a color that compliments your skin tone is vital. There are four major skin tones: Fair, Beige, Olive, and Dark. To find your skin tone, match your self with one of the following groups.
Fair + Cherry
Beige + Burgundy
Beige and Olive are similar. A lot of times having a tan makes it harder to determine where you fit (like Jess Alba below.) Beige has cooler undertones while Olive has warmer. If you still can't decide which shade you are, check out the veins on the underside of your wrist. Blue veins will be beige while greenish will be olive!
Olive + Scarlet
Dark + Crimson
APPLICATION:
Throw these steps into your normal beauty routine for a flawless fab pout! When your lips are vibrant it is important to keep the rest of your make up simple. Aim for matte skin, simple eyes (I do just liner + mascara), and highlight (on cheeks, under brows & inner corner of eyes!)
A.) Prep work: Exfoliate!! Slather a layer of Vaseline over mouth before you step into a steamy shower. Use a washcloth or old toothbrush to gently scrub lips in circular motions. Rinse thoroughly and wash face after so that your cleanser will break down any excess oil left behind.
B.) Groom thy self! Take care of stray hairs around eyebrows and any upper lip & chin fuzz.
C.) Before you start your make up, dab some Vaseline on lips for added hydration.
D.) After your face and eye make up is complete, begin on lips. First, blot your lips dry with a tissue. Make sure they are totally dry! Wet = color smear.
E.) Next, using your lip liner, trace along the edges of your lips. Liner is basically wax which creates a boundary for your color. If you don't use a liner, the color will feather out around your mouth.
F.) Apply color as stated below depending on which type of product you choose! There are lots of options so you can find one that works best for you!
G.) Use a Q-Tip dipped in powder to trace along edges of lips correcting mistakes and ensuring boundary.
H.) Highlight your cupid's bow (the V of your upper lip). I like to use a small eye shadow brush for this.
Et VOILA! You've achieved the perfect red lip!
PRODUCTS:
Color product & application: (Each shown in collection above, going from left to right)
1. Crème lip stick- Using a lip brush, begin in the center of your pout. Blend outward to the sides (not up and down, you want to stripe the color then blend using small circles.) Along edge of lips going from corners of mouth to the center, use small linear dashes with brush tracing and flicking inward so color doesn’t feather out. My choice is the new MAC Marcel Wanders lipsticks in Gesina and Digna! The pigment is insane!! $22
2. Stain- Trace mouth first. Fill in using grand sweeping back-and-forth motions. Blend by blotting lips together. Let dry. Its like using a marker! Fill in and touch up as needed. I love the Givenchy Painted Lips Stainers in Rose Impression! $25
3. Gloss- This is great as a stepping stone to a richer pout because the color payoff is sheer. Use gloss wand, or a q-tip if the gloss is from a squeeze tube, dab 3 dots on each lip, in circular motions blend together starting from center and going outwards. Korres Cherry Full Color Gloss in Red52 is the bomb! Infusing Vitamins C & E, this gloss feels amazing on! $17
4. Tint- The key is to be strategic about where you place the color and how fast you blend it because tints dry quickly. Apply the color in the center of the mouth and use finger to blend outward. For edge definition, trace brush very lightly along edges. If you want a darker hue, repeat the process until desired color is achieved! Benetint is by far the best tint I've ever used, going on smoothly and incredibly blendable. $28
5. Pencil- Line as you would lip liner. Next, fill in mouth starting from center and going outward in circular motions. Blend with fingers. I'm addicted to NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils! I use Cruella almost every time I do this look, and Dragon Girl is another color worth checking out! $24
6. Balm- The easiest of all lip colors, using a balm can be done without even needing a mirror! WASH YOUR HANDS, then use index finger to lightly glide atop the surface of the balm. (Don’t dig into it!) Then dab onto mouth and rub to blend. Balms are so silky soft and feel really comfortable wearing. Not sticky or runny like a gloss, not matte, chalky, or dry like lipsticks and stains… so suitable for a girl of any age! You can find balms that are sheer, bright, or shimmery. To deepen shade just layer up! For an absolute perfect pout use Buxom's Big & Healthy Lip Balm in Bora Bora! It slightly plumps lips while providing mega hydration! $15
